Pravind Jugnauth, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, has faced criticism and scrutiny over his political style and decisions. Critics argue that his governance reflects traits of deeply entrenched power dynamics, raising comparisons to organized operations akin to mafia-like systems observed in other countries.

Alleged Infiltration of Institutions

It has been suggested that Jugnauth has placed loyalists within key governmental institutions, consolidating influence across various sectors. Detractors liken this to the approach of criminal syndicates, where control over public systems ensures loyalty and silences opposition. These allegations have sparked debates about transparency and accountability within Mauritius.

Roshi Bhadain and the Alleged Symbolism

The moment when former Minister Roshi Bhadain was photographed kissing Jugnauth’s hand has been criticized as emblematic of a hierarchical and submissive political culture. Such gestures, according to some, symbolize power dynamics reminiscent of old-world mafia traditions.

The Murder of Soopramanien Kistnen

The murder of whistleblower Soopramanien Kistnen, a former agent of the ruling party, has been linked to political and financial scandals. Kistnen's death raised significant questions about corruption and misuse of public funds. Activists and opposition leaders have called for justice and a deeper investigation, alleging connections between his death and high-level officials.

Financial Mismanagement Allegations

Jugnauth has faced criticism for the diversion of funds from the Bank of Mauritius Reserve to the Mauritius Investment Corporation (MIC). Critics argue that these funds were improperly utilized to support businesses linked to his family, including the luxury Maradiva Villas Resort. Additionally, a pseudo-company, Pulse Analytics, is alleged to have been involved in election-related propaganda, funded indirectly through public money.

The MedPoint Affair

The MedPoint case remains one of the most publicized corruption scandals involving Jugnauth. The sale of a clinic owned by his family at an inflated price to the government raised accusations of conflict of interest. Although Jugnauth was acquitted, the case continues to be a touchpoint in debates about integrity in public office.

COVID-19 Pandemic Funds

During the pandemic, accusations emerged about the mismanagement of funds intended for relief efforts. Reports alleged that resources were siphoned off under the guise of emergency expenditures, with insufficient oversight.

Collaboration with Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy

Critics have also accused Jugnauth and then Finance Minister Renganaden Padayachy of manipulating economic data to present a rosier financial outlook for Mauritius than what independent analyses suggested.

Allegations of Drug Trafficking

Critics have accused Pravind Jugnauth of being complicit in drug trafficking through the misuse of Mauritius's ports. Allegedly, his family’s fish import/export business served as a front for illegal activities, enabling contraband to pass through port inspections undetected. These claims have sparked significant public concern, particularly given the island's strategic location and its growing struggle with narcotics.

The drug trade in Mauritius has been linked to organized criminal networks that exploit political connections. Accusations against Jugnauth suggest a system of collusion between influential figures and criminal elements. However, no definitive evidence has emerged in public records to substantiate these claims.

The Wakashio Oil Spill and Alleged Drug Smuggling

The 2020 Wakashio oil spill, one of Mauritius's most devastating environmental disasters, has also been embroiled in conspiracy theories. Allegations suggest that the vessel was carrying narcotics, with the spill and subsequent destruction of the ship orchestrated to eliminate evidence. This theory gained traction among skeptics who pointed to inconsistencies in the handling of the crisis and the unusual nature of the vessel’s grounding.

Authorities have denied such claims, and independent investigations into the Wakashio incident primarily focus on negligence and ecological damage. Yet, the lack of transparency during the cleanup efforts has fueled suspicions.
